Women began playing baseball in Vassar College in 1886. Since that time, women have played many different levels of professional softball including the famous Bloomer Girls.

Professional softball leagues existed during the 1940's and 50's. Women's baseball evolved from softball in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, as did men's professional baseball. The growth in interest in women playing "hardball" has steadily increased since the popular movie "A League Of Their Own". There are now over 22 womens baseball teams across the country. Baseball is now a choice for girls in Little Leagues in every state. Opportunities for women to make great strides in providing baseball at all ages is at hand.
